In July 2022, the Lexington Police Department and Laurel County law enforcement released a joint statement regarding a local drug bust that both viewed as one of the largest in the area's history. According to reports, five Lexington residents were arrested in a two-part drug bust that first began as an armed hostage situation in Laurel County.
From the event in Laurel County, law enforcement arrested three Lexington residents and seized 1.25 pounds of meth, 23 grams of fentanyl, and 79 grams of pressed fentanyl. The next day, Lexington Police arrested two additional suspects and confiscated 4.7 pounds of cocaine, 30.9 grams of heroin, 43 pounds of meth, 19,000 dose units of pressed fentanyl, and three firearms. In total, the two drug busts are believed to have a street value of $2.5 million.
