Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for Leesville, LA
Notable News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Leesville, LA
In July 2022, the Vernon Parish Narcotics Task Force announced they completed a drug raid in Leesville which resulted in the discovery of a large amount of illegal narcotics. According to reports, a search warrant was executed at a residence on Maple Street in Leesville following an extensive, year-long investigation by Vernon Parish Narcotics Task Force that had been targeting illegal drug activity in the area.
Inside the Leesville residence, the task force agency collected over 11,000 ecstasy pills, four pounds of methamphetamine, four pounds of cocaine, over four pounds of marijuana, roughly 6 pounds of synthetic marijuana, and multiple stolen firearms. While individuals at the residence fled upon law enforcement's arrival, agents were able to link a local man using DNA samples collected from the scene, resulting in him later being arrested and charged with drug possession and distribution.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Leesville, LA
Governor John Bel Edwards signed a new act into law in June 2023 to create new penalties for fentanyl and carfentanil possession in the state of Louisiana. These two drugs are highly potent synthetic opioids that are responsible for the majority of drug overdose deaths across not only Leesville and the surrounding state, but the entire country as well.
Now, under Act No. 399 (HB90), a Leesville resident who is found to possess or distribute more than 28 grams of fentanyl or carfentanil on a third conviction will face a minimum of 99 years in prison and up to a half-a-million dollar fine. With no signs of fentanyl-related deaths and crime slowing down anytime soon, state lawmakers hope these new penalties will send a strong message to local offenders to help reduce these rising concerns.
