Lee's Summit, Missouri - Drug Testing

Substance Abuse Trends for the City of Lee's Summit

Like many other parts of the country, the Lee's Summit area struggles with opioid abuse. In the state of Missouri, drug overdoses are the leading cause of death among young adults, and 70% of these overdoses are related to opioid use. The synthetic drug fentanyl is also becoming a major issue. In Missouri, between 2016 and 2021, the number of "non-heroin opioid deaths" increased three-fold. In Jackson County, one in five drug overdose deaths occurs among children under the age of 15. The Jackson County Health Department recommends that parents talk to their children about the dangers of drug abuse and the prevalence of fentanyl as early as possible to try to avoid unnecessary fatalities.

Local Police Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Lee's Summit

While most drug addicts don't think of local police as the first people they want to see, in Lee's Summit, the police department is asking those suffering from substance abuse disorders to come to the station for help... and to bring their drugs with them. As part of a larger program called Safe Passage, the Lee's Summit Police Department offers amnesty, allowing citizens to turn their opioids and narcotics over to police with no threat of criminal charges. The department also partners with a treatment program known as ReDiscover. Officers will drive a substance user to a treatment facility, where they are evaluated for outpatient treatment. The program is 100% voluntary and outstanding warrants can be waived for non-violent felonies. Thanks to a grant, the treatment is also free.

Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Lee's Summit

The streets of Lee's Summit are a bit safer now that a local man has been sentenced to 25 years in federal prison for his role in the alleged multi-million dollar conspiracy that led to him distributing more than 2,000 kilos of cocaine. The 43-year-old man was also ordered to forfeit the profits he made from his drug dealing - an amount totaling $976,862.

According to Acting U.S. Attorney Teresa A. Moore, "A long prison sentence will help protect our community from the violence that always accompanies guns and drugs, and send a clear signal to drug traffickers that their criminal activity won't be tolerated."
