According to the Oklahoma Drug Threat Assessment 2021, methamphetamine is Oklahoma's most significant drug threat. In 2021, methamphetamine was involved in at least 629 overdose deaths in the state—a 20.3 percent increase compared to 2019. Other drugs that commonly affect the state include nonmedical marijuana, cocaine, heroin, and prescription opioids.
Like many other states, Oklahoma is fighting the increase in opioid-related deaths. In 2020, more than 3.2 million opioid prescriptions were dispensed. Other drugs are often spiked with fentanyl, making an already dangerous opioid even more deadly.
In 2020, Oklahoma's prescription overdose death rate went up by 53 percent. This means that about 25 state residents are affected per 100,000.
