Mark Pfister, the Lake County Health Department Executive Director, spoke about the increase in overdose deaths in Lake Zurich and Lake County, IL. "Our community, like many others throughout Illinois, has been impacted by the opioid overdose crisis," he said, "We must take steps to prevent overdose deaths and save lives." Lake County Health Department Medical Epidemiologist, Dr. Sana Ahmed, talked about using naloxone to prevent deaths from overdoses. "Opioid overdose is preventable and may be reversible with quick action," Ahmed said. "Naloxone is a safe and effective tool that is known to save lives, and it can easily be administered into the nose by anyone, including friends, family, and non-medical community members."

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Lake Zurich, IL

Lake Zurich and Lake County residents have access to naloxone free of charge. Naloxone is a life-saving medication that can reverse the effects of opioids when used in time. The county urges residents to carry the medication if they or someone they know is at risk of overdosing. Naloxone is administered in nasal spray form once someone recognizes the signs of an overdose: shallow breathing, no breathing, sleepiness, unresponsiveness, blue nails or lips, or cold and clammy skin. Naloxone kits include four doses of naloxone, and fentanyl test strips are also available. The county also provides educational resources to Lake Zurich and Lake County residents about recognizing the signs of an overdose and administering naloxone.
