Lake Forest falls under Orange County, which experienced a major increase in fentanyl overdose deaths in recent years. In 2020, the number of fentanyl-related fatalities in the county more than doubled. Orange County ended 2019 with at least 165 fentanyl-related deaths, and in 2020 fentanyl-related deaths increased to at least 432. Eight years ago, the county only had 16 people die from fentanyl for the year. The availability and use of fentanyl on the streets have increased in Orange County and nationwide, leading to thousands of deaths yearly.
In 2020, the Sheriff's Department seized 1,761 fentanyl pills and 64 pounds of powdered fentanyl. In the first half of 2021, the deputies seized 87 pounds of fentanyl and 57,000 pills. Showing how much more this opioid is present in the county.
Lake Forest man caught selling drugs to students
In 2020, a 22-year-old man living close to a Lake Forest High School allegedly sold drugs to students. While the police executed a search warrant and arrested the man, the school practiced a short lockdown. Police searched the man's residence and found psilocybin mushrooms, marijuana, and supplies for packaging and selling the substances. The man is now facing multiple charges related to unlawful possession of different substances. Later, he had a court bond hearing and bailed himself out after paying ten percent of the $30,000 bail set for him.
