Lafayette, Louisiana: Drug abuse trends

In 2021, Parish County saw an increase in drug overdoses, namely opioid-related overdoses. Drug overdoses caused at least 136 deaths in the county, and 122 were opioid-related. Most opioid-related deaths involved fentanyl or other synthetic opioids. Many times, street drugs like cocaine or methamphetamine were spiked with fentanyl.

The number of people dying from overdose keeps increasing in Parish County, and has grown by 216 percent since 2017. Fatal overdoses caused by opioids are increasing even faster, and rose by 388 percent during the same period. Officers recorded more than twenty times as many fatal drug overdose deaths involving fentanyl in 2021 than in 2017.

Fentanyl is fifty times stronger than heroin and a hundred times stronger than morphine. Doctors often prescribe it for severe pain, but it is often misused or abused to increase the euphoric effects of other substances.

Lafayette complaints led police to a cocaine stash

Lafayette police asked people to report if they saw anything unusual or disturbing regarding potential drug activity, and people listened. Because of multiple complaints, law enforcement found a drug stash!

They discovered crack cocaine, marijuana, powder cocaine, and two digital scales, which led to the arrest of two people. Lafayette police are requesting people to continue cooperating with them so they can take more dangerous drugs off the streets.
