La Mesa is situated in San Diego County, which experienced an increase in drug overdose fatalities from Q1 2020 to Q1 2022. Emergency department visits related to opioid overdoses rose from 26 percent to 87 percent from Q1 2020 to Q1 2023. One of the most alarming trends in the county has been the increase in fatalities linked to opioids and fentanyl. The age group most affected by overdoses was the 25 to 59 bracket.
To help curb the opioid epidemic, the San Diego County Office of Education introduced educational materials, including data, materials, curriculum, and even avenues to schedule informative in-person sessions to amplify awareness about opioid dangers and substance misuse. They also provide training on naloxone to prepare individuals to respond effectively to overdose situations. Naloxone is now available in all schools in the county due to its life-saving potential in reversing opioid overdose effects.
La Mesa man arrested and police seize drugs
In November 2022, following a month-long investigation, an 18-year-old male was arrested by the police. This led to searches in two residences, one of which was located in La Mesa. The search delivered a significant haul: 240 bottles of Xanax, quantities of cocaine and ecstasy, and 1,000 doses of LSD. Along with these, several firearms, prescription medications, and a substantial $50,000 in cash were seized. The young man is now facing charges related to drug possession and alleged firearm offenses.
