As part of an 11-day operation throughout the central Texas area, Killeen law enforcement seized more than 200 pounds of marijuana back in February 2022. Titled "Operation Washout 2.0," the multi-day affair involved multiple law enforcement agencies from Bell, Coryell, and McLennan counties, including the Killeen police department, as well as various federal agencies.
A total of 250 arrests related to a wide variety of gang-related activities were made over the course of the operation, including drug trafficking and firearms offenses. Though both recreationally and medically legal in many other states, Texas law currently prohibits both the recreational and medical sale, possession, and consumption of marijuana.
Laws, Rules, and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Killeen, TX
In July 2021, Texas Governor Greg Abbott signed Senate Bill 768 into law to implement new state anti-fentanyl legislation. Fentanyl is a highly potent and deadly synthetic opioid responsible for many opioid overdose deaths across the state of Texas. The new legislation enhances criminal penalties for the distribution and manufacturing of fentanyl.
Under Senate Bill 768, the production or delivery of 4-200 grams of fentanyl has a minimum punishment of 10 years in prison and a maximum of life. Amounts of 200 to 400 grams now face a minimum of 15 years in prison, as well as 20 years for 400 or more grams. State officials hope this new legislation will act as a strong warning to local drug dealers and help reduce the frequency of opioid-related deaths.
