In September 2017, the New York Police Department announced the arrest of two Kew Gardens residents following one of the largest drug busts in local history. According to reports, Blanca Flores-Solis and Rogelio Alvarado-Robles were arrested at their apartment after law enforcement witnessed them exchanging a shopping bag with an unknown man outside of a local Walmart. When police searched their vehicle, they discovered a backpack that contained a kilogram of cocaine.
With this evidence, law enforcement were able to obtain a search warrant to examine the couple's apartment. Inside the residence, 97 kilograms of packaged drugs including pure Fentanyl, Fentanyl/heroin mix, and cocaine was discovered. The sheer volume of Fentanyl shocked local law enforcement, who determined it to be the largest Fentanyl bust in NYC history. Officials say the amount seized could have induced 32 million fatal overdoses.
