Kenosha, Wisconsin: Drug abuse Trends
Kenosha falls under Kenosha County, which has experienced a significant rise in drug overdose deaths in recent years. Fentanyl, which is a potent opioid that is responsible for a large percentage of deaths each year, has become more commonly laced into other drugs on the streets. In 2019, Kenosha lost at least sixteen people due to fentanyl overdoses and another 40 people in 2021.
In Kenosha County, locals have developed drug prevention programs to fight this trend. The Kenosha County Opioid Task Force was formed with the mission to "Understand Addiction. Promote Recovery. Strengthen Community." Kenosha County also has a mobile health unit called Human Services on the Go that travels throughout the community to provide education, training, and resources on drug abuse. Last summer, the unit distributed over 400 Narcan kits at community events in addition to the 800 kits distributed by Kenosha County Public Health. Narcan is a drug that can help reverse opioid overdose effects.
