Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Kansas City, KS

In June 2022, federal law enforcement issued an indictment against 16 Kansas City metro area residents for their roles in a large-scale drug trafficking operation. Indictment records show that 13 of the defendants participated in a conspiracy to distribute at least 5 kilograms of cocaine, as well as fentanyl and methamphetamine, across the Kansas City area.

Six of the indicted Kansas City residents were also charged for their participation in a 2015 to 2020 money-laundering conspiracy, where officials believe the financial transactions contributed to the drug-trafficking operation. This prosecution was made possible by the Kansas City Metro Strike Force, a division of the Federal Department of Justice's Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces, which works to dismantle the most serious drug trafficking organizations.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Kansas City, KS

In 2019, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly signed HB2119 to create new laws for prescribers who issue opioid prescriptions to patients. This law relates to the prescription drugs that are considered schedule II-V controlled substances, which contain opiates. Beginning in July 2020, prescribers must now transmit these prescriptions solely through electronic means.

By eliminating paper prescriptions and mandating that medical professionals only use electronic means for opioid prescribing purposes, Kansas hopes to more effectively track the flow of opioids across the state and reduce the chances of illegal prescribing practices. The legislation also works to better identify concerns of opioid abuse in patients and help prevent the risk of deadly opioid overdose.
