Laws and Regulations Pertaining to Substance Abuse in Jenks, OK
In May 2023, Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt approved a new bill aimed at reducing the rising amount of opioid-related overdose deaths being seen across the state. Under previous Oklahoma law, drug offenders found in possession of fentanyl testing strips could be charged with possession of drug paraphernalia. Oklahoma lawmakers argued that prohibiting the possession of testing strips only increases the risk of overdose and supports the rising overdose death trend.
Now, under HB 1987, fentanyl testing strips are no longer considered drug paraphernalia as per Oklahoma law. Residents battling substance abuse issues cannot be prosecuted if found in possession of them. Lawmakers hope this law can more effectively tackle overdoses across the state alongside other harm reduction resources for residents, including expanding Narcan accessibility and introducing a needle exchange program.
