Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse
Project Save Lives is a local initiative aimed at preventing drug overdose deaths in Jacksonville. This program provides support and treatment options for individuals admitted to emergency rooms with a drug overdose. Since its launch, Project Save Lives has potentially saved at least 20 lives, with approximately half of the nearly 4,000 patients offered services accepting them.
A study by the University of Florida's Center for Health Equity and Engagement Research found that participants in the Project Save Lives program had a statistically lower overdose rate compared to those who did not participate. Jacksonville is committed to supporting this life-saving program with a proposed investment of $1.1 million in the upcoming fiscal year.
Employment Drug Testing

Local Drug Busts or Events
In January 2024, Jacksonville Sheriff T.K. Waters announced the arrest of 14 individuals following a major drug bust. This operation involved multiple law enforcement agencies and targeted a drug trafficking organization in Jacksonville, leading to the dismantlement of five drug trafficking organizations across Florida, Georgia, and Puerto Rico.
The operation spanned from June to November 2023, a period during which the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office investigated 433 overdose deaths. Officials seized 118.53 pounds of methamphetamine, 12.5 kilograms of NDMA, 7.5 kilograms of powdered cocaine, 164.1 grams of crack cocaine, 2.25 kilograms of fentanyl, and 13.58 pounds of marijuana. Sheriff Waters emphasized the operation's role in enforcing the law, holding drug traffickers accountable, and removing harmful substances from the streets.
