In June 2021 in Islip, NY, Suffolk County filed a lawsuit against major drug companies to hold them liable for the opioid epidemic. The companies marketed opioids as having a low-addiction risk, which was misleading. Major drug distributors failed to report suspicious opioid prescription orders as well, according to Jayne Conroy, who was representing Suffolk County. Conroy stated, "Profits soared, and our communities were devastated... Manufacturers and distributors control the valve to stop the flood of opioids. They have their hands on this." Suffolk County sued New York Attorney General Letitia James and the companies beside Nassau County. The defendants denied misconduct. Suffolk County accepted a settlement of $21.5 million.

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Islip, NY

Islip Township offers opioid overdose prevention training to residents of Islip and Suffolk County. The training educates individuals to notice the signs of an opioid overdose, administer naloxone (otherwise known by its brand name, Narcan), as well as educate them on additional steps to assist someone who's overdosing while waiting for EMS to arrive.
