Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.
Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Irvine DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Irvine, California - DNA Testing
Establishing paternity in Irvine, California
There are three ways of establishing paternity in Irvine, California. Parents can sign a Voluntary Declaration of Parentage or Paternity, ask their local Child Support Agency to establish paternity, or go to court and the judge can establish it.
Unless both parents agree on the parentage and sign the declaration voluntarily, there are DNA tests to prove paternity. Child Support Agencies and courts usually order DNA tests to determine the biological father. Based on the DNA test results, paternity can be established, and both parents will have the same rights and responsibilities towards the child.
Californian man finds his daughter in search of his father
Ted Wood was adopted as a baby. When he was older, he found his biological mother, who had him during high school, but he could not find his father even after searching for years. Ted decided to take a DNA test. At the time, he was married and had three kids.
He had donated sperm during college because it was an easy way of earning money, and the clinic promised him anonymity. He had no idea people were now using DNA tests to search for parents who were sperm donors. Over the years, he matched with distant cousins and family, but this time his results said he had a daughter. He had long forgotten about his sperm donation and had no idea she existed.
His daughter Melissa had been searching for answers. She found out as a teenager that she was conceived by sperm donation, so she contacted him and thanked him. They started to text more, but they lived thousands of miles apart, and Ted did not feel like a father figure. Her dad died years ago, and Ted was all she was left with when her mother passed away. They agreed to meet. Wood also found another two girls were his biological daughters due to his sperm donation, and they decided to meet.
Ted never met his birth father, but he did find out some information about him. His father married another woman, then divorced, and then started dating a man. During a fight, his father shot the man and then killed himself. Wood was shocked and disappointed with this information, but at the same time he was happy to reconnect with daughters he had no clue existed.
