Local Initiatives to Curb Substance Abuse in Iowa City, IA

The Iowa Harm Reduction Coalition was founded in 2016 by Iowa City native Sarah Ziegenhorn. After returning to her hometown, Ziegenhorn found the opioid crisis making its way into Iowa City and other parts of the state. She realized that although overdoses weren't occurring as frequently as in other U.S. areas, too many residents were getting sick from sharing unclean needles. Ziegenhorn formed the coalition to reduce overdoses and infectious diseases caused by sharing needles. The program includes overdose prevention training, naloxone training and distribution, and resources for care and recovery services. In efforts to combat infectious disease, the coalition provides education, counseling, and distribution of materials to prevent infections related to sharing needles. The coalition also offers risk reduction kits that include condoms, antibiotic wipes, vitamin C, sterile water, cottons, ties, and cookers.
