Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.
Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.
Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Indianapolis DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Indianapolis, Indiana - DNA Testing
Establishing paternity in Indianapolis, Indiana
If you are an unmarried woman and wish for your child to have a legally established father, signing the father's name to the birth certificate is not enough to legally determine paternity. You and the father must sign a paternity affidavit.
If the man does not want to sign this form, a paternity case can be filed with the court. The case can also be filed by the man who thinks he is the father, the child, the division of family and children, or the prosecuting attorney. Courts usually order a DNA test to establish paternity if the alleged father disagrees. An accredited laboratory must perform genetic testing; the court will usually determine which lab to use.
Cases should be filed within two years of the child's birth, but there may be some exceptions.
A woman from Indianapolis, IN, meets a son she had no idea existed
Kristin Schoonveld was searching for her biological father in 2019 but found something she never expected. When Kristin took a DNA test, she was hoping she would finally be reunited with her dad, but the test results said there was a match for a son.
At first, it did not make sense to her, and she thought it must be a mistake because she was never pregnant. However, she could not believe her eyes once she saw a picture of her son because they looked so much alike. Kristin remembered that she had donated her eggs in 1994. Back then, she thought it would be a great way of helping somebody have a family. Years later, her son was now looking for his biological mother.
Kristin decided to contact him. Just before the Covid-19 pandemic began, they managed to meet in person, and she will never forget this moment. "It was just instant love," she said after seeing her son for the first time.
