Substance Abuse Statistics for Hoover, AL
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Hoover, AL
To reduce the illegal "doctor shopping" experienced across the state of Alabama, local officials developed three new laws to help reverse the growing prescription drug abuse rate. With Alabama reporting one of the highest drug overdose rates in the entire nation, these laws work to address the concerns of drug abuse at some of its core sources.
For example, HB 152 made it illegal for a patient to lie to a doctor to obtain prescription drugs for substance abuse purposes, which is now considered a Class A misdemeanor and punishable by up to a year in jail. Likewise, HB 151 strengthened pain management clinic regulations to ensure clinics are registered with the Alabama Board of Medical Examiners, and requires clinics to have a medical director who is a board-certified physician in the state of Alabama.
