Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Highlands DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Highlands, TX - DNA Testing

Establishing Paternity in Highlands, TX

When an unmarried Highlands, TX couple has a child, it's important they establish legal paternity as soon as possible. By establishing legal paternity, the biological father gains legal rights over his child and provides the opportunity for the child to receive benefits, including health insurance and social security, from both parents. Likewise, the legal establishment of paternity will be required if either parent applies for monthly child support services.

In the state of Texas, an unmarried couple can establish paternity by completing an Acknowledgment of Paternity (AOP). This voluntary document legally declares the child's father and allows his name to be placed on the birth certificate. The form can be completed at the hospital following the child's birth or through a Harris County AOP-certified entity. If a parent does not agree to establish paternity, it's highly recommended they file a paternity petition in Harris County Family Court to initiate the establishment process.

Dealing with Mistaken Paternity in Highlands, TX

In some unfortunate situations, a Highlands, TX man may have established paternity and held child support obligations to later find out he is not the biological father. Under the Texas Legislature, family code allows the court to terminate a parent-child relationship in addition to child support obligations in the event of mistaken paternity.

The law requires the man who is questioning his paternity to file a petition in Harris County Court to terminate the establishment. This process will require proof of DNA testing to accurately support his claim. If results conclude he is not the biological father, then establishment and child support obligations can be terminated.

Paternity Programs in Highlands, TX

To protect the paternal rights of Highlands men who believe they have fathered a child but possess no legal rights, the state established the Texas Paternity Registry. To register with the database, the presumed Highlands father must first file a Notice of Intent to Claim Paternity before or within 31 days of the child being born.

By submitting this form, the man's details are then inputted into the Texas Paternity Registry. In the event of child abandonment, legal adoption hearings, and revocation of parental rights involving the child's mother, the man will be notified of these legal proceedings and have the chance to claim legal rights over the child.
