Hempstead, New York: Local initiatives to curb drug abuse

In response to the CDC's alarming report of about 100,000 drug overdose deaths in a year, a historic high in the U.S., Supervisor Don Clavin and Councilman Anthony D'Esposito are increasing efforts to combat the overdose crisis in America's largest township. In 2020, the pandemic had an impact on drug overdoses, which rose by 29 percent. Now, there are efforts in Hempstead to expand Narcan training and drug awareness seminars. These seminars educate residents on administering Narcan (naloxone), a life-saving drug for opioid overdoses.

"The Town of Hempstead continues to be a leader in combating opioid addiction and overdoses," Clavin said. Residents who attended the program got a free Narcan response kit and learned how to identify if someone was experiencing an overdose, properly administer Narcan to the victim, and contact emergency services.
