In December 2022, the Riverside County Gang Impact Team (GIT) reported a massive seizure of fentanyl from a Hemet apartment. According to reports, the investigation began in partnership with the U.S. Postal Service when officials learned of an illegal fentanyl shipping operation taking place through the U.S. mail system.
Law enforcement tracked the shipping operation to the Hemet area suspect, where they conducted a raid on the man's apartment. Inside the apartment, officers discovered 18.6 kilograms of fentanyl, a half-pound of methamphetamine, and a loaded "ghost" pistol. Officials believe the massive amount of fentanyl had an estimated street value of more than $3 million and equated to more than 9 million lethal doses. The suspect was arrested on multiple drug trafficking charges.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Use in Hemet, CA
In September 2022, the Governor of California signed AB 2188 into law to create new protections for employees and off-duty cannabis use. According to this new law, it is now considered unlawful under the California Fair Employment and Housing Act for employers to discriminate against an individual during hiring and termination for their use of cannabis off the job.
If an employer requires a drug screening test, results that the individual had non-psychoactive cannabis metabolites in their system can also not be used for hiring or termination purposes. Keep in mind, there are certain safety-sensitive positions — such as those in the building and construction trades as well as federal government positions located in California — to which this new law does not apply.
