The number of deaths due to synthetic opioids is constantly rising, and just a few years back, many people had never even heard of them. Although many fentanyl-related overdoses occur in people who unknowingly take the drug, some people who struggle with substance abuse say they prefer fentanyl because it doesn't require needles like heroin. However, fentanyl is also much more potent than heroin, which often causes accidental overdose.
$4.2 million worth of fentanyl seized in Alameda County
A major drug bust happened in Alameda County in 2022. Alameda County Sheriff's Office admitted that detectives in Hayward and Oakland seized $4.2 million worth of fentanyl. They recovered 42,000 grams of this illicit drug which was going to be sold in the Bay area.
Police arrested multiple people thanks to this months-long investigation and probably saved numerous lives. The sheriff's spokesman did not give any more specific information since the investigation is still ongoing.
