Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Hampton, VA
In an effort to curb the deadly risks of prescription drug abuse and overdose in Hampton, the Virginia Department of Health developed the Prescription Drug Overdose Prevention Program. This statewide program collaborates with multiple city, county, and state officials to promote various initiatives that can help reduce the risk of drug abuse throughout local communities.
Of the many efforts funded by the program, some of the top focuses include preventing injury and death from drug addiction. Through this focus, local officials have been working to increase community access to Naloxone, an overdose treatment drug used in the event of an emergency overdose to reverse deadly side effects. Preventive efforts also include implementing stronger prescription monitoring efforts to curb the risk of dangerous prescribing practices.
Local Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Hampton, VA
In August 2021, a Hampton woman was convicted on charges, including conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute heroin, as well as conspiracy to commit money laundering. According to court documents, Contessa Williams, 45, worked with others to sell and distribute over 1,000 grams of heroin. Williams now faces a minimum of 10 years in prison and a maximum life sentence.
The conviction came after her boyfriend, Tracy Hall of Norfolk, pled guilty to being the leader of a large Hampton-area drug trafficking ring that distributed more than 50 kilos of heroin and claimed a total profit of roughly $1.5 million. Investigation records show that Williams' primary role was to assist Hall in retrieving, laundering, and spending these drug proceeds. It was noted that Williams used these proceeds to open a liquor store in Georgia as well.
