Substance abuse statistics for Hamden, CT
Hamden, Connecticut: Drug abuse trends
Hamden experienced a significant increase in drug overdose fatalities in 2020. Experts attribute this rise to two primary factors: the COVID-19 pandemic and the prevalence of fentanyl, a potent opioid. In 2020, there were 141 overdose deaths among Hamden, New Haven, North Haven, Bethany and Woodbridge. Hamden recorded the second most overdose fatalities.
From the 1st to the 11th of July 2023, New Haven County, where Hamden is located, reported an increase in both fatal and non-fatal overdoses related to cocaine and crack. While the majority of these incidents took place in New Haven, Hamden too was affected. Authorities emphasize the importance of keeping Narcan accessible, given the growing risk of fentanyl being mixed into drugs. Even a tiny, undetectable amount of fentanyl can result in a fatal overdose.
