Specimens we can test for DNA

The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.

Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.

Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests

A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.

When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Hadley DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Hadley, MA - DNA Testing

Highlighting the Importance of Establishing Paternity in Hadley, MA

When a Hadley child is born to two unmarried parents, Massachusetts law cannot automatically declare a child's legal father until paternity is properly established. Establishing paternity is a legal process used by thousands of Massachusetts residents each year to declare a child's legal father and grant him parental responsibilities and rights.

Establishing paternity is an extremely beneficial process, as it will be required by Massachusetts Child Support Services if either parent wishes to seek monthly child support payments from the non-custodial parent. Establishing paternity also benefits the child, as it gives the child two avenues to collect benefits from their parents, including inheritance, social security, or healthcare coverage.

Methods of Establishing Paternity in Hadley, MA

In the state of Massachusetts, there are two ways Hadley parents can establish paternity. The simplest way is for both parents to sign a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Parentage form in the hospital following a child's birth. This form can also be completed at a later date through the Hadley Clerk's Office or Registry of Vital Records and Statistics (RVRS).

The second method is a court-ordered paternity establishment. This approach is often used by a Hadley parent who is unable to locate the other parent or when a parent simply refuses to establish paternity. By submitting a petition to file paternity through Hampshire County Family Court, a judge will request the opposing parent appear in court and agree to DNA testing. Testing is used to verify a child's biological father and accurately establish paternity.

Disestablishing Paternity in Hadley, MA

In some unfortunate instances, a Hadley parent can learn at a later date that the presumed father of their child is actually not the biological father. This discovery could result in a Hadley man being held responsible for monthly child support obligations for a child that is not his.

In these instances, a parent can file a complaint in Probate and Family Court and request to have the establishment rescinded within 60 days of its filing. Highlighting the importance of DNA testing, after this 60-day mark, the establishment can only be made in court within one year of the signing on the basis of fraud, duress, or material mistake.
