In March 2021, a federal grand jury in the District of Puerto Rico filed an indictment charging 56 violent gang members for their roles in a large-scale drug trafficking operation located throughout the San Juan region. In an initiative titled "Operation 65", federal law enforcement partnered with local police departments, including Guaynabo PD and San Juan PD, to target a criminal organization known as 65 Inc.
According to indictment details, from 2015 onwards, the organization distributed large amounts of cocaine, heroin, marijuana, Oxycodone, and Alprazolam within close proximity of numerous housing projects in the San Juan region. Many of these locations were also used as stash spots to assist in trafficking operations in the mainland United States. More than 100 weapons, which were commonly fired throughout local communities as a display of power, were also seized.
