Substance Abuse Statistics for Greenwood Village, CO
Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Greenwood Village, CO
To combat the ongoing deadly effects of the opioid epidemic experienced across Greenwood Village, Arapahoe County, and the surrounding Colorado area, county officials established a prescription drug overdose task force. Initiated in 2013, the task force consists of numerous local government and health organizations, including the Tri-County Health Department, Arapahoe County Mental Health, and the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office.
The task force was brought together to address the ongoing problem of opioid overdose and abuse through enhanced law enforcement, doctor education, legislative actions, and public awareness. Since the start of the task force, some of the actions completed include enhanced training for first responders during drug intervention measures, improved state-facilitated prescription databases, and locations where individuals can safely dispose of unwanted medication.
Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Greenwood Village, CO
In May 2018, Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper signed Senate Bill 18-22 Clinical Practice for Opioid Prescribing in an effort to reduce prescription opioid abuse. This law limits the number of opioid pills a health professional can prescribe, including general physicians, dentists, and even veterinarians. Under SB 18-22, patients receiving a first-time opioid prescription, or a prescription 12 months or later since a previous script, may only receive a seven-day supply.
Likewise, after the first prescription, a health professional must review the Prescription Drug Monitoring Program before prescribing additional medication to determine if the patient is potentially doctor shopping and/or abusing opioids. For more severe instances of cancer, postsurgical pain, and hospice care, medical health professionals have the ability to increase prescription amounts with proper documentation.
