Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.
Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.
Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Greensboro DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Establishing paternity in Greensboro, NC
There are many reasons why establishing paternity can be vital for a child, such as access to paternal medical information, social security benefits, a greater sense of identity, military benefits, death, and insurance benefits.
In North Carolina, paternity can be established by Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity or by court order. The easiest way of determining the legal father is at the hospital after the child is born. The father must be present in order to establish paternity in this way, and he must provide identification to have his name added to the Affidavit of Parentage.
If there are any doubts about paternity, a DNA test is recommended. DNA testing is highly accurate and can quickly determine whether the man is the biological father of the child or not. Legal action can be filed with the courts if paternity cannot be established voluntarily. After filing, a court hearing is held, and DNA testing is usually requested to establish paternity.
A man from North Carolina meets his mother after decades apart
Hauser was adopted as a child, and in the 90s, he started searching for his biological family. Although he attempted to obtain his family medical records when he began having kids of his own, he was informed that the adoption records were closed and sealed. Besides knowing that his biological mother could not support him alone, Hauser could not find any information about his parents. Years later, he decided to take a DNA test in the hope he could locate his birth parents.
Eventually, in 2020, he discovered his dad's death certificate and realized he had a son. Hauser found his brother on Facebook and sent him a message explaining the family connections. Little did he know, however, that they also shared the same mother. The men were full-blooded brothers.
They talked a lot, and Shaw invited Hauser to his wedding, where he also met his mother! Shaw had also not seen his mother for 13 years, so it was a very emotional event for him as well.
