In May 2020, U.S. Attorney James P. Kennedy Jr. announced the successful takedown of a drug trafficking ring operating in the Greece and Rochester, New York areas. The takedown comes in part of a four-year investigation by local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies that targeted JanCarlos Gonzalez-Rivera, who was known by informants as the biggest heroin dealer in the area. Using text and phone communications, GPS tracking, and financial records, intense surveillance operations provided enough evidence to execute on 24 search warrants.
During these raids, officials collected 3.5 kilograms of fentanyl, roughly 2 kilograms of cocaine and crack cocaine, and almost $1 million in cash. A total of 17 defendants, including leader Gonzalez-Rivera, were arrested and charged for their extensive roles in the trafficking operation. The charges include conspiring to possess with intent to distribute and the distribution of 400 grams or more of fentanyl, one kilogram or more of heroin, and five kilograms or more of cocaine.
