Local News Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Germantown, MD
In October 2022, the U.S. Attorney's Office District of Maryland announced the prison sentencing of a Germantown drug dealer for his role in a drug distribution effort that led to an overdose death. During his guilty plea, the drug dealer revealed that the overdose victim contacted him to purchase heroin and he provided her with a mixture containing fentanyl and morphine instead.
On August 10, 2020, the victim was found deceased in her bedroom, where an autopsy later determined drug overdose as the cause of death. About two weeks later, law enforcement located the dealer at a Germantown hotel and executed a search warrant that resulted in the seizure of a fentanyl/heroin mixture, drug distribution paraphilia, and a digital scale. The dealer was ordered to serve 114 months in federal prison, five years of supervised release, and pay $1,125 in restitution.
Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Germantown, MD
The Maryland Behavioral Health Administration was recently awarded a multi-million dollar SAMHSA State Targeted Response to the Opioid Crisis Grant to help develop the Maryland Opioid Recovery Response Initiative (MORR). This effort is taking a strategic approach to increase preventive and recovery services for Maryland residents suffering from opioid use disorder.
One of the core efforts of the MORR initiative is to support opioid misuse prevention by placing stronger control over prescribing practices as well as increasing public awareness around the ongoing opioid epidemic. With higher public awareness, MOOR hopes that further preventive efforts, such as expanded Naloxone access and wider recovery support, can reduce the overall rate of opioid abuse and deadly overdose being experienced across the state of Maryland.
