News Relating to Substance Abuse Concerns in Georgetown, TX
In March 2023, the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) released a health advisory warning Texas residents about the emerging dangers of Xylazine-laced drugs and their high risk of overdose. Xylazine is a powerful tranquilizer drug commonly used in veterinary settings and not approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for human use.
According to the advisory, law enforcement has discovered that Xylazine has been used to "cut" recreational drugs, such as heroin and benzodiazepines, to extend the duration of the effects of the drug as well as increase street value. Xylazine's combination with other illicit substances has resulted in at least four deaths across the state. Furthermore, Xylazine is not an opioid, so Naloxone or Narcan will not work to reverse deadly overdose side effects.
Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse Concerns in Georgetown, TX
Williams County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) announced a new initiative in December 2022 aimed at reducing the rising deadly effects of opioid overdose. Through this program, EMS officials have placed roughly 60 boxes of Narcan throughout county buildings across the area. Narcan is an emergency treatment drug used to treat and reverse the deadly side effects of opioid overdose.
The various boxes of Narcan have been placed inside the same wall units that hold emergency AED defibrillators to help provide immediate access to those in need. This new initiative comes at an especially important time, as Williamson County officials recently experienced an 8% increase in the number of opioid overdoses across the area between 2021 and 2022.
