Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the people being tested. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory. Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by registering online and shipping the specimens to us.
Legally Admissible DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible DNA testing service. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. In order for the results of a DNA test to hold up in court, for child support, or to change the name on a birth certificate, the test must be done at a clinic using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Fresno DNA testing technicians are trained to follow guidelines that ensure that the results can be used for legal purposes.

Fresno, California - DNA Testing
DNA Test Helps Fresno Brothers Solve a Family Mystery
Brothers Eddie and Travis Aroz, of Fresno California, had heard stories of their family history from the time they were small boys. They knew that their grandfather had been killed in a bar fight when their father was two years old, and their grandmother had moved the family to California. However, they did not know where he was buried and many other details of their family lineage were unclear.
Interested in learning more, Travis took a DNA test and began researching his family lines. He discovered that their grandfather, great-grandfather, great aunt, great uncle, and great uncle-in-law, and possibly other relatives were all buried in an abandoned cemetery. Upon making this discovery, the brothers traveled to Arivaca Junction Cemetery in Arizona to pay their respects. They are pleased that they now have information about their heritage to share with their children and grandchildren. Travis also planned to continue learning more about their family, the cemetery, and, possibly, who is in the other unmarked graves.
Amber Frey's Paternity Revelation
The murder of Lacy Peterson by her husband Scott Peterson was a top news story. Several years later, it was discovered that Amber Frey, Scott's mistress at the time of the murder, was deliberately lying about the paternity of her four-year-old daughter. While she had asserted that the father was Anthony D. Flores, a 29-year-old from Fresno, CA, a DNA test said otherwise.
Test results found that Christopher B. Funch, the owner of a Fresno bar called Porky's, was the child's biological father. Upon acceptance of the test, the courts ruled that Flores was no longer obligated to continue paying $567 per month in child support. However, Flores has no recourse for getting that money back. While Frey had no comment about the situation, Flores was quoted as saying, "I can't believe that Amber and her attorney would not have the decency to apologize for what they've done to me."
Establishing Paternity in Fresno
According to Bains Law Offices, a Fresno, CA paternity law firm, there are several ways to establish paternity in California. If a child's parents are married at the time of birth, the husband is automatically considered to be the child's biological father unless this is contested within the first two years of the child's life. If the parents are not married but both couples agree about the identity of the child's father, they can sign a "Voluntary Declaration of Paternity." Otherwise, a paternity case can be filed with the California courts. In this case, the courts will typically order a DNA test and then make their decisions based on the results.
