Opioid overdose is a nationwide problem, and this epidemic began to increase in deaths from opioid prescriptions in the early 2000s. That was followed by heroin overdose and an even sharper increase in deaths caused by synthetic opioid overdose. In 2020, there were 1,828 opioid overdose deaths in Indiana, with 33.6 deaths per 100,000 residents, and the numbers are increasing. In 2022, Indiana experienced over 2,500 overdose fatalities. The state is trying to fight this crisis with multiple initiatives to curb the opioid epidemic.
Local initiatives to curb drug abuse in Fort Wayne, IN
Indiana has multiple programs to reduce drug abuse, and Fort Wayne is starting multiple projects to curb the drug overdose rate within the state. The Indiana Department of Health is focused on integrating state and local efforts to increase the prevention of opioid drug abuse and reduce harm. Indiana's prevention and harm reduction programs include overdose fatality programs, overdose response projects, naloxone education and distribution, syringe service and reduction programs, and community capacity building.
Additionally, the state has launched the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, which offers a connection to trained specialists. Thanks to $25 million in opioid settlement funds, the state can invest even more money in the behavioral health workforce, harm reduction programs, prevention, and treatment across the state, including Fort Wayne.
Fort Wayne also launched the Fort Wayne Allen County Task Force for Opioid Strategic Planning. The Task Force focuses on preventing individuals from abusing substances and rehabilitation for those who need it. They have been developing different plans and methods to assist people who struggle with substance abuse.
