Fort Collins, Colorado: Drug abuse trends
There was a major spike in drug overdoses in 2020 in Fort Collins, Larimer County. In 2019, 25 people died because of fatal overdoses in Larimer County. In the first half of 2020, 28 people had already passed away from drug overdoses. The rate of drug overdose deaths was rising, and experts said they had not seen such an increase for years. Experts believe this surge was caused by the pandemic restrictions, which negatively affected many people's mental health and kept them from their support groups.
During the same period, the death rate from COVID-19 was not keeping up with the drug overdose deaths. While 28 people died during this period from drug overdoses, 21 people had died from COVID-19.
Another issue in Larimer County is fentanyl. It was much less common to hear about fentanyl in the past few years. Now, there are cases of overdose that involve fentanyl every other day in Larimer County. Experts estimate that one out of four or five fentanyl-related overdoses results in death.
More than 7 pounds of cocaine were seized in Larimer County
In June 2022, an ongoing investigation and a traffic stop with a drug-sniffing dog led the police to seize more than seven pounds of cocaine and 250,000 dollars. After the traffic stop, a search warrant on a residence in Fort Collins also led police to find even more cocaine.
A 42-years old Leonel Perera-Delacruz was arrested because of the possession of cocaine with suspicion of intent to distribute it. There are also other possible charges, but the investigation is still ongoing.
