Fishers, IN - Drug Testing
Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for the City of Fishers
Like many cities across the United States, Fishers faces its fair share of opioid problems. In September 2022, Fishers police issued a warning to students, young adults, and parents regarding a new drug that is causing problems nationwide. The drug is called rainbow fentanyl and it's being sold in the form of powder, pills, and blocks. The FPD also stated that they believe narcotics are being sold primarily through social media and they are investigating narcotics sales in the community.
The previous year, in 2021, Fishers police had warned the community about the dangers of fentanyl following the overdose death of three locals who had ingested counterfeit pills laced with the drug. At that time, they also voiced concerns over the drugs being sold through platforms such as Snapchat and TikTok.
In October 2021, local officials seized more than 25,000 counterfeit pills believed to be laced with fentanyl. Former Hamilton County Coroner John Chalfin also stated that 29 county residents died of opioid overdoses in 2022, with 19 of these deaths being caused by fentanyl. This has been the annual average in the area since 2014.
Community Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Fishers
Fishers residents can now obtain free Naloxone (Narcan) kits, thanks to the community-based Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution (OEND) Program. To get started, residents submit an online application and complete a 20-minute training session that covers how to use the kits. This life-saving drug is used to reverse opioid overdoses and may help prevent many fentanyl-related deaths.
Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Fishers
Hamilton County stands to receive over $7 million dollars over the next 18 years to help combat drug abuse. The funds come as part of a $26 billion nationwide settlement against opioid manufacturers and distributors for their role in creating the current opioid epidemic. County officials are planning to use the funds for a drug and behavioral assessment center and to increase treatment alternatives for addicts and overdose victims in Fishers and the surrounding area.
