Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.
Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.
Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Federal Way DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

Federal Way, Washington DNA Testing
Washington's Presumed Paternity Law
According to the King County Paternity Unit, a man is presumed to be a child's biological father if he and the child's mother were married at the time of birth or the couple was divorced within 300 days of the child's birth. Even if the couple knows the man is not the child's biological father, he is still presumed to be the legal father until a court order is issued either stating that the man is not the father or confirming that another man is the child's father. Until this happens, the man may also have an obligation to pay child support.
How to Establish Paternity in Federal Way
In Federal Way, and the rest of Washington state, when a child is born to parents who are not married, it's necessary to take steps to establish legal paternity. According to the Clement Law Center, a paternity law firm serving Federal Way and the surrounding area, this can be done by both parents signing and filing an Affidavit/Acknowledgment of Paternity. When this is done, the mother can immediately demand child support and the father can immediately petition the courts for visitation or custody.
If both parents do not acknowledge a child's paternity, a child's parentage can be established by petitioning the courts for an Establishment of Parentage. As part of the process, the court will typically order a DNA paternity test to confirm whether the man is the child's biological father.
Benefits of Establishing Paternity
While it requires a bit of effort, there are many reasons to go through the process of establishing a child's paternity. Washington Family Law Group, which serves Federal Way and the surrounding area, lists the following benefits:
