Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Fayetteville, NC
As part of an ongoing $26 billion national settlement involving opioid manufacturers negotiated by North Carolina Attorney General Josh Stein, Cumberland County is set to receive a $17 million payout. This settlement is the result of large-scale manufacturers, including Cardinal Health and Johnson & Johnson, being found guilty of falsely labeling OxyContin with a low addiction rate.
With Fayetteville receiving $2.1 million of the Cumberland County amount, the city plans to use the funds for initiatives such as Naloxone training, court diversion programs, and recovery support services. With the help of these various initiatives, local officials hope to reduce the frequency of deadly opioid overdose, a major factor in this enormous pharmaceutical settlement.
