Farmington Hills, Michigan: Drug abuse trends
While Michigan saw a significant reduction in drug overdose deaths from 2017 to 2019, the state reached an all-time high in 2020, with a 14 percent increase from 2019. Experts believe that the pandemic is to blame for this sharp increase. Increased isolation, depression, and anxiety were caused by the regulations that the pandemic imposed.
Another factor in drug overdose deaths rising is the growing presence of fentanyl. Fentanyl is a potent synthetic opioid that can lead to deadly overdoses with as little as two milligrams. In 2019, at least 51 percent of fatal drug overdoses in Michigan involved fentanyl. Synthetic opioids were responsible for the loss of at least 1,458 Michiganders in 2019.
First responders in Michigan are trained to administer Narcan—a life-saving drug that can reverse the deadly effects of opioid overdose—when necessary. In the first seven months of 2021, about 8,000 doses of Narcan were used to save lives.
