Fall River, Massachusetts: Local initiatives to decrease substance abuse
Fall River is the tenth largest city in Massachusetts and fourth on the list with the most opioid overdose fatalities. In 2018, there were 55 deaths; in 2019, it was 67; and in 2020, the number rose to 75 opioid overdose deaths. Locals are trying to prevent the number of overdoses from further increasing by participating in the safe stations' program. They designated six state fire stations as havens for people with substance use to connect them with the help they need.
Additionally, the Fall River substance addiction task force launched the Advocacy Fund, which assists with finances for people who need extra money to get into treatment. The Advocacy Fund can help cover security deposits or rent for places like detox facilities or sober homes, or help pay for clothes, personal items, or anything else they may need to enter treatment.
Fall River drug dealer arrested with fentanyl and guns
In September of 2022, authorities arrested a man from Fall River. They seized over a kilogram of fentanyl and fentanyl pills, large amounts of cocaine, marijuana, and handguns. Police also discovered more than $13,000 in cash. The man was charged with drug trafficking without bail.
