Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Evanston
An alleged dealer who is accused of distributing cocaine to hundreds of customers in Evanston and the surrounding area is now off the streets. The man, aged 43, was recently sentenced to seven years in federal prison for operating a drug trafficking operation along with his father. It's alleged that the operation included up to 18 drivers who made deliveries to customers throughout the area. In light of the investigation and sentencing, U.S. Attorney John R. Lausch said that others who "distribute poison" in Chicago area communities should see this as a "warning."
Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for the City of Evanston
Cities across the United States struggle with substance abuse, and Evanston is no exception. In 2019, the city reported 12 drug overdoses and one death. By 2021, these numbers had skyrocketed to 43 overdoses and 14 deaths. Of those, at least 70% were caused by opioid use.
Another disturbing trend is the increased use of the veterinary drug xylazine. While this was once virtually unheard of, Cook County has seen a 16.8% spike in overdose deaths attributed to the drug between 2021 and 2022. In the veterinary field, this medicine is used as a pain reliever and sedative. On the streets, it's commonly known as "tranq" or "tranq dope." It's even more dangerous than some other opioids because the overdose reversal drug Naloxone does not interact with it in the same way.
Local Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Evanston
The City of Evanston is aware of the area's opioid problems and is taking steps to combat the issue. This includes distributing Narcan to individuals in need and providing prevention education and resources, as well as resources to assist with treatment and recovery. In the future, the city also plans to establish a syringe service program, work with faith communities and nonprofits to help provide outreach and support, and expand training for outreach teams, community support groups, and first responders.
