Notable Events Related to Drug Use in Erie
In May of 2022, the U.S. District Court in Erie indicted 25 people in what is one of the largest drug cases in the area. The indictments indicate that the accused conspired to deal methamphetamine, cocaine, and fentanyl. The suspected Erie-based drug ring's operations spanned from Puerto Rico to Florida and Northwestern Pennsylvania. A total of 20 of the suspects are also from Erie, including the 27-year-old lead defendant.
Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics for Erie, PA
The fentanyl problem in the Erie area continues to grow. According to recent data released by Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook, 4 out of 5 of the drug overdose deaths that occurred in Erie County in 2021 were attributed, at least in part, to fentanyl. In 2016, approximately 40% of drug overdose deaths were at least partially attributed to the use of fentanyl. In 2017, this increased to 54%, then to 62% in 2018, 60% in 2019, 75% in 2020, and 80% in 2021.
The total number of drug deaths in Erie County was 102 in 2021. This is also a significant increase from the 80 that occurred in 2020. The coroner's office states that people often mistakenly purchase fentanyl when trying to purchase heroin. While heroin was present in 26% of post-fatal-overdose toxicology reports in 2017, by 2020 it had decreased to 10% and was just 6% in 2021.
Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Erie
The Erie County Office of Drug and Alcohol Abuse offers services such as residential and outpatient treatment programs and drug and alcohol prevention programs. Some of the services provided include case management support, drug and alcohol screening, assessments, treatment referrals, and ongoing monitoring. Preference is given to particularly vulnerable members of the population including pregnant women with a history of substance abuse, injectable drug users, overdose survivors, and veterans.
