Specimens we can test for DNA
The easiest and most reliable way to obtain a DNA sample for paternity testing is to swab the inner cheeks of the alleged father and child or children. These skin cells are known as buccal cells, and they rub off easily onto cotton swabs and remain in place for analysis by our laboratory.
Other specimen samples, such as hair follicles, fingernails, and garments that might contain someone's DNA, can also be tested. An Alternative Specimen DNA Test is done by ordering one of our testing kits online and shipping the specimens back to us.
Legal DNA Tests vs. "Peace of Mind" At-Home Tests
A Legal Paternity Test is a court admissible lab testing service performed at an AABB accredited laboratory. Accurate results for DNA paternity testing with 99.99% confidence or greater take about a week.
When deciding which type of DNA test is right for you, consider first what you might do with the results. A legal paternity DNA test will hold up in court for such matters as child support or to change the name on a birth certificate. This test must be performed using strict chain of custody procedures. Our Erie DNA testing technicians are trained to follow these guidelines so that the results will be legally admissible.

DNA Test Reunites Erie Woman with Sister
Elaine Crandall of Erie, PA was adopted in 1956 and despite wondering about her biological family, she never pursued any type of search. When her daughter, Sarah Crandall took a DNA test, she was surprised to learn that she was a 99% match with a woman named April Grant. It turned out that April and Elaine were sisters and April had been searching for decades for the sister she believed she had. The sisters were able to make a connection and have met in person several times. When asked about the meeting, April said, "Elaine and I, not only do we look alike, I'm pretty sure we have the same personalities."
Establishing Paternity in Erie, PA
"Establishing paternity" means determining a child's "legal" father. In the state of Pennsylvania, if a child is born to unmarried parents, paternity can either be established "voluntarily" or "involuntarily." If both parents agree that the man is the child's biological father, they can sign and file a Voluntary Acknowledgment of Paternity form.
If the alleged father signs the form but the mother refuses to sign it, the Department of Public Welfare registers it as a "claim to paternity." While this does not provide the man with any paternity rights, it does allow him to be notified of any attempts to give the child up for adoption. If the man wants paternity rights, he must file a request with the courts to establish paternity "involuntarily." In most cases, the courts will require a DNA test before making a ruling.
Either the child's mother or father can file a Petition to Determine Paternity with the family courts or the mother can begin the process by filing a Complaint for Child Support. Individuals in Erie seeking child support should contact the Erie County Domestic Relations division, which is located at the Erie County Courthouse, 140 West Sixth Street, Room 6H, Erie, PA 16501.
Benefits of Establishing Paternity
There are many important benefits of establishing a child's legal paternity in the state of Pennsylvania. This includes:
According to attorneys at the Erie-based Cairns Law Offices, the courts cannot issue child support or child custody orders until legal paternity has been established.
