The prevalence of opioid overdoses in Cook County has significantly grown in the last few years. From 2018 to 2020, about 4,283 people died from opioid overdoses in Cook County. From June to December 2020, about 82 percent of all opioid overdoses involved fentanyl—a potent opioid that leads to fatal overdoses in tiny amounts.
In 2020, Cook County reported 1,840 opioid overdoses that resulted in fatalities, and the numbers continued to grow in 2021. The high availability of fentanyl and its presence in other substances is often to blame. Since drug dealers often spike other drugs with this opioid, people use it without realizing it and accidentally overdose.
Elgin man arrested after police seized firearms and drugs at his place
A 21-year-old man from Elgin, Illinois, is facing multiple felony charges. Police seized drugs and firearms at his home. The police purchased illegal drugs from him online through social media, and they executed a search warrant at his residence. The warrant led to the discovery of multiple guns and drugs, including cannabis, oxycodone pills, LSD, and cocaine.
The man is now facing 25 felony charges. The Elgin man was already on probation, so he was arrested and charged. Afterward, the police transported him to the Kane County Jail.
