Local Initiatives to Help Curb Substance Abuse in Effingham, IL

In 2022, the Effingham Police Department announced the launch of a new substance abuse initiative titled the Safe Passage Program. This program is designed to help local residents suffering from substance abuse concerns gain access to the right forms of treatment that can address their addiction issues and put them on the right track.

Through the Safe Passage Program, drug users can contact the Effingham Police Department and request assistance without the concern of legal repercussions. From here, the Effingham police will locate a rehab facility best suited for the individual. After a bed is located at a local treatment provider, a program volunteer will then pick up the individual and transport them to the facility to ensure the participant properly reaches and enters the program.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Effingham, IL

In 2023, the Illinois General Assembly passed two new laws to better address the rising number of deadly opioid overdoses being seen across the state. The first law updates the current Overdose Prevention and Harm Reduction Act to now allow pharmacists and retail stores to dispense and sell over-the-counter fentanyl testing strips, beginning in 2024. These strips can be used to test the presence of fentanyl in various drugs to help better prevent deadly overdoses.

Furthermore, a second law was passed by the Illinois General Assembly to create new requirements for Illinois schools that help officials more effectively address the concern of opioid overdose. Beginning in 2024, all Illinois schools will be required to carry opioid antagonists, such as Narcan, as a way to treat on-campus opioid overdoses quicker and better prevent their deadly side effects.
