This time, he was arrested and booked in the Payne County Jail on a $2 million bond.
Local Police Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Edmond
Edmond residents who have been arrested for certain drug-related crimes may be able to get a second chance thanks to the Oklahoma County Treatment Courts. The county's Drug Court is focused on providing individuals with the resources they need to achieve lifelong recovery. This includes helping participants secure stable housing, employment, and transportation vouchers. Upon successful completion of the program, individuals can have their criminal charges dismissed and are immediately eligible for expungement. In addition, their court costs could be significantly reduced or dismissed.
Substance Abuse Trends and Statistics in Oklahoma
The two leading substances involved in drug overdose deaths in Edmond and the rest of the state of Oklahoma are methamphetamine and fentanyl. Although the rate of fatal drug overdoses decreased 20% between 2016 and 2019, they skyrocketed by 28% between 2019 and 2020, and the problem has gotten worse. In 2022, Oklahoma had the second-largest increase in drug overdose deaths across the country. During that time, there were 1,027 drug overdose fatalities in the state, a 22% increase over 2021.
While fentanyl is a major problem across the country, in Oklahoma, the number of unintentional deaths related to prescription opioids decreased from 500 in 2013 to 266 in 2020. Jeff Dismukes with the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services says that while efforts to decrease opioid-related deaths have been successful in recent years, methamphetamine use is driving up the number of overdose deaths.
