Notable Events Relating to Substance Abuse in Edgewood, MD

In 2012, Harford County law enforcement arrested 21 individuals, including 10 suspected gang members, for their role in a large drug operation. According to reports, a local gang who called themselves the "World's Most Dangerous" primarily operated in the Edgewood area and was responsible for a massive flow of drugs into Harford County.

The investigation first began in late 2011, after an uptick in crack cocaine sales, robberies, and violent activity started to occur in the area. The task force obtained a warrant for a wiretap investigation, where suspects' cell phone and landline conversations were monitored. Officials gathered enough information to execute 15 search and seizure warrants throughout the area.

While executing these search warrants, law enforcement officials recovered 4.5 kilograms of powder cocaine, 2 kilograms of raw heroin, and 2.4 pounds of marijuana, all of which had a combined street value of roughly $680,000. Of the 21 individuals arrested, eight were federally indicted and charged with drug distribution and conspiracy charges.

Laws and Regulations Relating to Substance Abuse in Edgewood, MD

The state of Maryland recently passed Senate Bill 166 to take a new step toward enhancing the security of controlled substance prescriptions and reducing prescription fraud. These new laws went into effect on January 1, 2022, and now require health professionals to prescribe all controlled dangerous substances through electronic means.

By solely relying on e-prescribing methods for patients, the state can more effectively track the flow of controlled substances across the Edgewood and surrounding Harford County area. Plus, they begin to eliminate the ability for individuals to fill fraudulent scripts.
