Drug overdose deaths in the state of Connecticut continue to rise at an alarming rate. According to the Connecticut Department of Health Drug Overdose Report, in 2020, there were a total of 1,372 fatal drug overdoses in the state. This reflects a 14.3% increase over the 2019 numbers. New substances were to blame for some of these deaths. This includes lethal combinations of xylazine, an animal tranquilizer, mixed with fentanyl and Flualprazolam, a designer benzodiazepine, combined with fentanyl.
With the exception of Litchfield County, all counties in the state experienced an increase in overdoses in 2020 as compared to 2019. Hartford County experienced 34.3 overdose deaths per 100,000 residents in 2019 and 37.5 in 2020.

Connecticut has received a State Opioid Response Grant (SOP) of $14,215,214 per year from 2020 to 2022.
