Notable Historical Events Related to Drug Use in Des Moines, IA

In June 2024, a man from Polk County was arrested and charged with distributing fentanyl, which resulted in a death. The man faces a possible penalty of 20 years, up to life in prison.

In July 2023, the Department of Justice executed nine federal search warrants in the Des Moines metro area. The DOJ revealed that these warrants were part of a year-long investigation into gun trafficking and drug distribution. During the searches, authorities seized approximately 13,000 suspected fentanyl pills, seven firearms, a machine gun conversion device, and $23,000 in cash. The investigation led to eleven arrests, with two defendants already in federal custody.

In June of 2022, a 57-year-old woman from Des Moines, IA, was found in possession of 187 marijuana plants. In addition to these plants, investigators found 2,162 grams of marijuana, 1,591 grams of THC edibles, and other products containing THC. She was charged with three controlled substance violations and two counts of failure to affix a drug stamp.

In July of 2021, twenty-one Des Moines residents, along with six other individuals, faced federal drug charges in two indictments related to fentanyl and heroin trafficking. Twenty-four arrests followed search warrants executed at 13 locations in Des Moines.

Government Efforts to Address Drug Problems in Des Moines, IA

The Iowa Harm Reduction Coalition (IHRC) works to prevent opioid-related overdose deaths by providing education and training. The organization also distributes naloxone, a life-saving medication that reverses the effects of opioid overdoses. Naloxone kits and training are offered to Des Moines individuals and families without a prescription or insurance.

The Overdose Education and Naloxone Distribution program is offered to health care organizations, law enforcement agencies, substance use treatment agencies, social service organizations, and public health departments in Des Moines and the state of Iowa.

The IHRC also offers risk reduction kits, syringe clean-up, HIV and hepatitis testing, fentanyl test strips, and a 24-hour hotline for questions.
