In May 2023, a Daytona Beach man was arrested on numerous drug-related charges following an ongoing investigation by the Volusia County Sheriff's Office. The investigation began in early 2023 when it was discovered that the suspect was trafficking fentanyl throughout the Daytona Beach region. It eventually led to a search warrant being executed at a Tomoka Road residence, where law enforcement discovered a large amount of drugs.
Inside the home, Daytona Beach officers discovered 26 grams of methamphetamine, roughly a kilogram of fentanyl, and various items used to produce fentanyl. The Daytona Beach resident was arrested on a collection of charges, including tracking and manufacturing fentanyl, maintaining a structure for drug trafficking, and possession of drug paraphernalia. The suspect was given a $1,650,500 bond as additional charges are pending due to an ongoing investigation.
Local Programs Used to Curb Substance Abuse Concerns in Daytona Beach, FL
To address the rising concern of opioid overdose in the Daytona Beach area, the Daytona Beach Fire Department (DBFD) and the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) partnered to develop the Drug Abuse Response Team (DART). With hundreds of Daytona Beach emergency calls involving opioid overdose each year, the DART initiative works to effectively address overdose concerns with in-person tactics.
The ultimate goal of DART is to identify Daytona Beach residents struggling with substance abuse and assist in connecting them to recovery programs and resources while out in the field. DART members visit Daytona Beach residents who have recently overdosed to provide them with information on local treatment options as well as Narcan Nasal Spray to reduce the risk of death in the event of another overdose.
